Mommy, Am I an American?
This is the story of a federal employee who is from an immigrant family. She went through a lot of trauma and drama with being fired and unfired all while her son was being questioned about his citizenship.
Lyrics
Oh Mommy, please tell me, am I an American?
The bullies say I’m not because my skin is tan
Don’t you and Daddy work for Uncle Sam?
The only home I’ve known is this American land
Our country of the free, ain’t what it used to be
All the doors are closing at the hands of the greedy
And those to try to give back are slapped on the second cheek
We’re no longer a safe haven for opportunity
Gran and Grandpa came here cuz they heard that it was great
The system they came from was riddled with mandates
Sacrificed their jobs for their children’s fates
They settled on a home in this American state
Our country of the free, ain’t what it used to be
All the doors are closing at the hands of the greedy
And those to try to give back are slapped on the second cheek
We’re no longer a safe haven for opportunity
I’m grateful to my parents for bringing me here
I got an education and made choices without fear
I served my adopted country for 14 years
And what thanks did it get me, but trauma and daily tears
Our country of the free, ain’t what it used to be
All the doors are closing at the hands of the greedy
And those to try to give back are slapped on the second cheek
We’re no longer a safe haven for opportunity
Yes son, you belong here, you are an American
No matter what they say, you are a citizen
Dad and I gave back, working for Uncle Sam
The home we’ve grown to love is this American land
The only home we’ve known is this American land
